Three time Grammy-winning artist Nelly has confirmed completion of a deal that will make him an owner of ZizZazz, an energy drink mix company that has quickly become one of the fastest growing in the nation.

ZizZazz debuted last spring and made an immediate impact due to coming in four different flavors served from portable single serving sticks.

The convenience of this packaging allowed the fledgling organization to steal valuable market share from competitors.

The company's decision to add Nelly is part of a forthcoming national campaign to further expand the brand in new markets.

For Nelly, it gives the St. Louis star another avenue to diversify his business portfolio and promote his upcoming album, Brass Knuckles.

"I'm excited to partner with ZizZazz, the drink mix helps my energy stay high during rehearsals and performances as I gear up for the release of Brass Knuckles," Nelly explained to AllHipHop.com. "I didn't want to just endorse it; I wanted to be part of the growth of the company. ZizZazz is a product that definitely fits my lifestyle. I can throw a few in my bag, grab a bottle of water and I'm set."

Since Nelly is the first big name attached to the product, ZizZazz hopes its rapid growth will continue to soar from the endorsement.

As an owner, Nelly's responsibilities will be television commercials, radio advertising, and spokesman duties at media appearances.

The rapper is also co-owner of the Pimp Juice energy drink brand, which is sold in the United States and in various countries throughout Europe.

Nelly's fifth album Brass Knuckles is due on September 16 and features appearances from Chuck D, Fergie, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, and Usher.

Producer Jermaine Dupri has hinted strongly of a possible collaboration with rock legend Bruce Springsteen.

Additional confirmed producers for Brass Knuckles include Pharrell, Babyface, Polow da Don, and Akon.

Nelly and T.I. Planning Joint Album

The King of the Midwest and the King of the South are teaming up for a project that will go down in history. In an exclusive interview for the Summer 2008 issue of Rap-Up, Nelly revealed plans for a joint album with T.I.

“We talked about doing a joint together, a whole album,” the St. Louis rapper disclosed to the magazine. “It’s not about just selling records for me anymore ’cause I’ve done that. It’s about making something that people will remember.”

The two chart-toppers are trying to recruit a third artist for the collaboration as well. They last worked together on T.I.’s “Show It To Me” off 2007’s T.I. vs. T.I.P.

The Country Grammar MC also shared his thoughts on his Southern friend’s run-in with the law, saying, “We all make mistakes. I’m not a judgmental person. I may not agree, but I’m not going to judge you for it because we all gotta be accountable and we all gotta take responsibility for the choices that we make. But be that as it may, I’m not going to stop being his friend because he made a mistake. I think that’s when you need your friends the most, when you have made a mistake.”

Sources confirm to me exclusively that rapper and occasional actor Nelly is joining CSI: NY for a multi-episode arc. The Grammy winner will play a club owner who serves as a confidential informant to Mac and his team.

"He's a great actor," gushes executive producer Pam Veasey of Nelly, whose only major thespian credit to date is 2005's The Longest Yard. "He really stepped up."

In other CSI: NY news, in a piece of stunt casting that has the words "Danny/Lindsay montage" written all over it, Maroon 5 will make a cameo in this season's second episode, airing Oct. 1.

Nelly has apparently said he doesn't want to be put up as a role model for young fans.

The hip-hop artist, who has caused controversy in the past for his raunchy lyrics and videos, told The Independent that rappers shouldn't have to set an example for children. He believes role models should be people in the child's life.

"Role models should be someone that's in your life on a daily basis, someone that's prevalent in your life, that you can see not just on television," he said.

"The only thing that kids see is that person's success. That's it."

Nelly also revealed that he would not consider changing his image or toning down his songs to please people.

"If I did that, what would I be telling the kids? To let society dictate you as a person?

"Sex sells. But I can't let society dictate to me as an artist. That's not what an artist does."

The 30-year-old's fifth album, Brass Knuckles, is out next month and features cameos from Usher, Akon and Ashanti. Nelly told the newspaper he is convinced the record will be a success: "I'm back, it's going down, there's no time to play!"

RAPPER Nelly has penned a tune for his new album about the horror of being stalked.

The St Louis rhyme-spitter, 33, told me: “I’ve had so many stalkers that lie about me and write stuff on my MySpace.

“I had this woman drive over to my house from Texas back in 2003 with her son in the car and she swore that I was from Texas and her son was mine.

“I felt sorry for the kid. She’d been telling him he was mine for as long as he could understand. He was 14 at the time and I was like: ‘What, did I have him when I was 12?’

He added: “I had to get a restraining order out against her in the end. It was scary, especially as I didn’t know what she was going to do next.”

Nel’s new disc Brass Knuckles hits the shops next month.

VODAFONE has announced its second TBA gig of the year. The Streets, N*E*R*D and McFly will make their way to Brighton to play on the beach on August 10.

Last night at LA’s Shrine Auditorium, UGK claimed two of the biggest honors for best group and video of the year for “International Player’s Anthem (I Choose You)” featuring OutKast. The always humbled Kanye West took home two awards as well. Alicia Keys, Missy Elliott, The Dream and Chris Brown were among the other big winners.

But the biggest winner of them all are the ones of you who chose not to watch this snoozefest. Peace out!

The rap star tells how he gets his game on

You'd think Nelly--a hip-hop star at 29--must have everything. The body (see photo). The bling (when we meet, he sports diamond-stud earrings as big as marbles). The balls (he drops two albums at once, Sweat and Suit, on September 14). But he wants more. And the more we speak with him, the more we realize he's not just full of admirable qualities like loyalty and discipline. He's ambition in a bottle. "I've always been a challenge person," he says. From the gym to the job, here's Nelly's lesson on looking out for--and becoming--number one.

ON WHY YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO AMBITIOUS

Well, I've never had anything. When you've never had anything, you want everything. I don't ever want to take this for granted or seem like I'm being lazy. I want to explore every opportunity that's possible for me. I figure, if you go out and try to do at least 20 things, sh--, four or five of 'em gotta come through! [Laughs.] I'm not going to be good at everything, everything is not going to be successful, everything I try is not going to pan out the way I planned it. But the more things I try, the more things I can accomplish, because something's got to work.

ON WHY SOME GUYS SELF-DESTRUCT AND OTHERS ARE SELF-MADE

Because it's real easy to quit. That way the only thing you have to worry about is how you feel about yourself. But when you're working hard toward something, you take a lot of responsibility on yourself. For me, it was the responsibility of my son and daughter and other families and a lot of other people counting on me. Some people don't want that responsibility.

ON THE COMFORTS OF LEADERSHIP

I like total control over everything I do. Nobody's more special than another; as a leader, you just have to want to make the big plays. What drives me is being an athlete first. I was an athlete [before I did anything in music], the captain of the team. I used to play shortstop; I always wanted the ball hit to me. In football, you need a first down? Throw it to me. That's just how I always thought about it. Same way with music. We need a hit? Let me go into the studio, I can pull it out. Some people are built for it, some people ain't. You have to want it. Some people don't. And I know I need a good team in order to be successful. It's all about loyalty. I want to know my friends are for real and will be there and do what they say they'll do. They know I'll do the same. That's what I have with the St. Lunatics. We're such a tight-knit family, it's like we have this understanding--we all think along the same lines, and we all have our own ideas, but we respect each other, and that's the biggest thing.

ON THE ONE THING THAT HE DOES JUST FOR HIMSELF

Working out. See, someone else will always gain in my line of work. If I gain, someone else does, too. The only thing that truly helps me is working out, because it's personal. It's the only thing I have that's only mine--just going out, staying active, playing ball, relaxing my mind. It's about the discipline, that you can make yourself do something. That's what we all have to get inside our minds. Like I said, I like total control. If I'm going to make myself get up every morning for the next month and play hoops for an hour and lift weights for an hour and a half, then I'm going to do it. If I can make myself do that, I can make myself do anything.

NELLY'S NECESSITIES

1. Success means taking on responsibility. Are you ready? 2. Money's nice, but it's not much without loyalty and friendship. 3. Want to be team captain? Then why aren't you asking for the tough assignments? 4. A great body is a gift to yourself--and only you can give it.

NELLY'S WORKOUT

You don't get a body like Nelly's just by sitting around writing rhymes. As with his music, Nelly works at it--day in, day out, whether he feels like it or not. He'll even jack up the intensity when the job keeps him in the studio or on the road. "If you can't find a gym, do as many pushups and situps as you can," he says. "I'll do 250 to 300 pushups--it keeps me pumped." Here, more secrets from Nelly about how to get a video-ready physique.

SHOULDERS

Build your routine around the military press, which works both the front and middle deltoid muscles. Nelly uses machines for variation, and you should also switch the barbell for dumbbells occasionally to work smaller muscles that stabilize and protect your shoulders from injury.

ARMS

To build big arms fast, Nelly works them that way. By using what he calls "power sets," or drop sets, you fatigue your muscles quickly, forcing them to grow back stronger and fuller. Here's how: Do as many biceps curls as you can using 75 percent of your one-repetition maximum (the most you can lift once). Without resting, reduce the weight to 50 percent of your one-rep max and go again. Continue reducing the weight and repeating this technique until you can't do any more.

CHEST

"It takes a lot of work," says Nelly. That's why consistency is key, and why he focuses on classic moves like the pushup and bench press. "I can start on [my chest] for 2 or 3 months and see it building, then I take like a few weeks off, and I'm like, bam, what happened? It's like someone stuck a pin in my pec!" Nelly recommends working your chest muscles from various directions by increasing or decreasing the angle of the bench. He's worked his max up to 270 with this strategy. Boost yours even higher with strong triceps. Do a set of close-grip bench presses after your regular bench routine, or do a drop set of lying triceps extensions at the end of your chest workout.

ABS

Fit guys like Nelly need to add extra resistance to keep their abs growing. That's why he holds a 25- or 45-pound weight plate across his chest during crunches. It challenges his abdominal muscles to work harder. But it would mean little without a sound diet and cardiovascular-exercise plan.

Nelly's Nutrition

He listens to his body, which tells him to ignore the three-meals-a-day rule. "I eat as I go. There's no set time. My body tells me what it needs." Typically, it tells him about six times a day. "I don't eat chicken, beef, or pork--I will eat turkey every now and then. And I do eat fish." So where does he get his fuel? It's not the pimp juice he raps about; it's Muscle Milk (available at GNC), protein shakes, and a lot of water. He also eats plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Nelly's Cardio

You won't catch him on a treadmill or bike--he gets bored. Instead, "I play basketball. Full-court, get my sweat up." Playing ball also gives him a goal to reach for--the rim. He says that for the first time in 4 years, he can dunk. Not bad at 5'10".

LEGS

Aside from running and jumping on the basketball court two or three times a week, Nelly trains his calves with standing calf raises and also does squats to condition his entire lower body. Another option is to use a medicine ball. Stand in front of a bench with your left foot on top of it and your right foot on the floor. Hold the ball in front of your chest. Now push off your right foot and bring your right knee to the ball. Then lower your foot to the floor. (Your right foot never touches the bench.) Do 15 repetitions, then switch legs and do another set.

When asked if he had any regrets in putting out his controversial “Tip Drill video ,Nelly replied:

“Hell no. You only regret things when you believe you’ve done something wrong. I did nothing wrong. That video was created for adults, to be aired at an adult time. I didn’t make that video for kids. I didn’t force any female to be in the video or to do anything they didn’t wanna do. The girls in the video were all professional dancers– they worked in strip clubs. That’s what they did!” “The people who complain about rappers needing to set a better example, don’t wanna be accountable for raising their own children. How is it that my daughter’s never seen Tip Drill?It’s because I have an understanding with my daughter. I tell her that she’s not allowed to watch BET (Black Entertainment Television) after a certain time. And to make doubly sure she doesn’t watch it, I block it after certain hours.”Take the time to block it, people! People wanna get mad at me, yet they’re not taking every precaution to make sure that their kids can’t access the things they don’t want them to.”

Nelly says he would be bothered if his daughter one day decided to become a video girl but that the decision would be hers:

Maybe I wouldn’t like it. But when she’s a grown woman, she’ll be free to make her own choices.”

So What is Nelly’s message to parents ? “Raise your own kids”:

“Back in the day, our parents took responsibility and I’m doing the same. I’m not gonna leave it to Lil Wayne, or Jeezy or Amy Winehouse to raise my kids. I love those artists but it’s not their job to raise my kids. That’s my job. I’m sure this isn’t a new theory, so how about we just raise our kids? How about that?”

Nelly’s parenting responsibilities were doubled in recent years, when, following the death of his sister, he gained custody of her two children. Nelly’s sister Jackie Donahue died in 2005, following a lengthy battle with leukemia:

“I don’t know if you ever really get over something like that,” he says. “I’d never lost anyone so close to me. That was my first time of experiencing tragedy to that magnitude. When you’re dealing with leukemia, you’re literally watching a person die and it was truly heart-wrenching watching that deterioration.It’s still tough but we’re getting through it. I say I have four kids because I have my nephew who’s 16 and my niece who’s 12. I’m like father to them, even though I’m not the father that’s there every day. But when I am home, I have one big Brady bunch and I love it. They all keep me going.”

It’s been about four years since Nelly released his last album and now he’s back with a new album, a new outlook on life, and some new material that he is sure his fans are going to enjoy. Terrell spoke with Nelly about his new album “Brass Knuckles”, balancing his business ventures, his relationship with R&B singer Ashanti, and what’s been going on in his life since his last album.

Terrell: What’s good Nelly?

Nelly: What’s happening pimpin’, how you?

Terrell: Oh, I’m good.

Nelly: Ok, that’s what’s up.

Terrell: Well, I guess the first thing I’d like to discuss is all these hats you’ve been wearing. Being the CEO of Dirty Ent, as well as your Apple Bottom Jeans clothing line, and still trying to maintain your status and career as a recording artist, does it ever get complicated or a bit overwhelming wearing all these hats at once?

Nelly: Hell yeah.

Terrell: (laughs)….Ok then.

Nelly: (laughs) I mean, you want the real answer, or you want me to sugarcoat it a lil’ bit? Naw, on the real though, it does. But, at the same time, if it was easy, everybody could do it, you know? Not saying everybody can’t do it, because anyone can do it just as well as I try to if they just put their minds to it and strive for the best and work hard. But it does man, I mean it’s a lot. The thing is, I know how it feels not to have. I actually spent more years not having than I have having and in that aspect, I ain’t really ready to stop having yet. (laughs) You know what I’m saying? So, you just put forth that determination and keep it moving.

Terrell: Absolutely. Now of course all your fans have been anticipating your next album entitled “Brass Knuckles”. I know that’s coming in August, (laughs) so what can people expect from Nelly with this new album?

Nelly: You know what man, this one here…..it’s gon be NICE. I can’t really front, I don’t really do the whole “Yeah, this is my best album ever!” you know? I never really do that because I don’t believe that that’s up to you to determine. I believe your fans are going to determine what album they like from you the most. No matter what you do, you might think this is the album that you just KILLED, and your fans may still be like “Yo, “Country Grammar was your best..” you know what I mean? So, what I do think is that whatever album that you’ve come to love of Nelly’s, I do believe you gonna put this one up there. I spent a lot of time on this project because, you know, I really went through a lot in these last four years business wise, as far as dealing with my company. Also, I lost my sister in 2005, then turned around six months later and lost my grandfather.

Terrell: Wow….

Nelly: So to be honest with you man, I wasn’t really….in the mood. It’s situations like that that make you think like “Let me enjoy my life a little more or spend time with my kids a little more or hug my mama more…”. You know? It’s just one of those type of things that you go through in life, you know?

Terrell: Right. Now you mentioned the passing of two of your family members recently, are there any special songs that you put on this album for either or both of them?

Nelly: You know what? I did do a song for my sister. But, honestly T, I don’t know if I’m gonna put it on there.

Terrell: Ok.

Nelly: Because I don’t know if people would really understand it and where I’m coming from. I don’t know if I just did it for me, I don’t really know how I feel about it right now man. It wasn’t a song I did for the fans or for everybody, I did it for me.

Terrell: Absolutely, that‘s understandable. As an artist I know it’s certain songs you do therapeutically.

Nelly: Exactly.

Terrell: So talk to me about some of the producers and artists you collaborated with this time around.

Nelly: Well of course, I always work with my family. That being Pharrell and The Neptune’s. Also, I got Jermaine Dupri. Myself, JD & Ciara got this joint called “Stepped On My J’z” which is the next single from the album and it’s real, real hot. And I know some people probably saying “C’mon Nelly, another snicker song?” But, it’s not like that with me. I might do nine snicker songs before it’s all said and done. (laughs) It’s just capturing the moment in time. These shoes meant a lot to us and it was a real fun song to do. I got Ciara on it too because I thought it would be pretty hot to get a females perspective on the record as well. I also got my man Akon and my girl Ashanti on this hot record called “Body On Me”. I got another song called “Self Esteem” on the album, which is one of my all-time favorites of the collaborations I’ve done because I was able to get the legendary Chuck D on this one. It’s a great song and I can’t wait for the fans to hear that one. Let’s see, who else?…Oh shit, I can’t forget I got song called “Long Night” featuring my man Usher. I think the ladies are gonna really like this one. Me and Usher went in on this one, I can’t even front. You know, you hear a lot of rappers on R&B songs and the singers on the hook. Basically the rapper raps and the singer sings. But, it’s not like that with me and Usher on this joint, we together as one on this one. Of course, I got my family the St. Lunatics on the album also. We got a song on there called “Lie”. It’s kind of our “To the right….to the right”, Beyonce had her “To the left, to the left”. (laughs) That’s just some fun shit that we thought was hot. I got a song with one of my new artists by the name of Avery Storm. He’s also got an album coming out real soon too. So, yeah mean, we’re in a really good place right now. Only thing left to do is get it out there and work it out, you know?

Terrell: That’s what’s up, definitely can’t wait to hear it. Now we recently saw you on BET’s special “Hip Hop vs. America”. I know you expressed your point of view on the whole issue and the fact that your label didn’t even want you to go on the show to begin with, yet you, along with T.I. still did. So, what was your motivation to go on the show and give your point of view?

Nelly: I think because it’s me. The label was like “Don’t go on there” and “You don’t wanna do this or do that…etc…” but honestly T, I really don’t know what the fuck their reasoning for not wanting me to go on the show was. (laughs) That didn’t really make sense to me. But, my reasoning was the fact that every time this issue came up, people wanted to pop MY video up and put MY name in it. All of this for ONE video…one video. They tried to make “Tip Drill” document my whole career. It’s one song and one video and on top of that….it was made specifically for adults, for an adult program. It’s not like I made the shit to put on 106 and Park, or to put on Rap City. It was made for a program that was for adults. So, I just felt like I was taking a lot of bullshit that was unnecessary man. People were being real hypocritical about the situation. It seemed as if they were trying to throw all the faults on hip-hop for the problems in the world. Hip-Hop is not the problem in the, we just choose to talk about the problems in the world, that’s all. But, we get a lot of people that want to worry about this and worry about that, but I don’t care man. I’ll sit and I’ll talk to anybody. I ain’t got no problem with debating with a muthafucka, I can debate on ANY level. I just felt like, why not go and do it? My man T.I., he felt the same way too. Even though my man got in a little bit of trouble on the back end and had a little issue, but like he said, I’m telling you what you shouldn’t do. So, it’s crazy man, but we’ll get it done.

Terrell: Ok, cool. Now it got back to me that you and my girl Kelly Rowland re-united on stage to perform your #1 single “Dilemma” over in the UK a couple weeks ago.

Nelly: Yes sir!

Terrell: Now, the fans as well as myself have been curious as to if you and Kelly might hook up again for another collaboration sometime in the near future?

Nelly: You know what, we actually talked about that while we was over there man. We talked about possibly doing a “Dilemma” Part 2. But at the same time, when you dealing with a song like “Dilemma” and the type of success that it had and the longevity of the song that took place, you gotta ask yourself, do you really wanna mess with that? But, the way me and Kelly looking at it is, we definitely are not trying to outdo that song, we’d never try to do that. But, we think it would be fun to do part two and see what happens. So yeah, we’ve talked about it, but we have to come up with something that’s super hot. I know a lot of people might think that it’s a classic song and collaboration, so we gotta make sure part two is perfect, you know?

Terrell: Well, I don’t think it’s a classic song, I KNOW it is.

Nelly: Thanks man, I definitely appreciate that, 4real.

Terrell: No problem. Now, we know some couples in the industry will choose to speak out about their relationship and then you have those who make the decision not to. You and Ashanti seem to have chosen to keep the details of your relationship on the low. What made you guys decide to keep things to yourselves, as opposed to some other couples in the industry?

Nelly: Well, it’s just one of those things where you wanna have something to yourself, you know? It’s really not a matter of….I mean, we know people ain’t dumb. (laughs) But, it’s almost like people can build you up, only to take you down. So, if you don’t want people to know certain shit, then why would you even tell them? But as far as the relationship, we enjoy each other’s company and enjoy kickin’ it and having fun, and that’s pretty much it. So, I guess if there’s something else that comes from it, when we’re ready to say it, I guess we’ll say it. But for right now, we just chillin’ man.

Terrell: Ok, cool. So, tell me what would be Nelly’s dream tour, who would you enjoy being on the road with?

Nelly: Well, my dream tour looks like it might actually happen. We talking about it right now. Me and my man Usher, we tryna work it out. I really think that would be incredible on all levels. I mean, every time myself or Usher mentions that idea to somebody their eyes just light up like “Whoa!“ Now, I’m not saying that it’s going to happen, because everything would have to fall in line, of course. But, I know me and him have talked about it and we both think that would be an incredible line-up for a tour. So hopefully we can get that cracking and it’ll jump off.

Terrell: That would definitely be a good look. Now I gotta ask you, who do you have in your CD player or your I-Pod? What’s Nelly listening to?

Nelly: Well, right now? Let’s see……I was fortunate enough….I know Wayne’s album just dropped, but I’ve had my copy for a minute now. I was one of the lucky few. I like Lupe’s album too man, I can’t even front. I think he kind of got slept on this time around. His album is incredible, for real. I was like “Man, dude went in on this one.” Let’s see who else, it’s tough for me man, because I got a variety of stuff.

Terrell: Yeah, I listen to your music and from hearing your albums, I can kind of got the impression that you have a pretty versatile ear for music.

Nelly: Oh yeah, well you definitely got the right impression. I listen to some of everything. I mean, who doesn’t love Alicia’s album? At the same time, I’m really finishing up my album and some songs for Murphy Lee and his project as well, which is gonna be crazy. But I haven’t been able to really ride out and get too deep into what’s out since I’ve been doing a lot of shit for this album lately, you know? But, if you name it I got it, because my lil’ brother keep me stocked.

Terrell: Ok, now I know the video for “Stepped On My J’z” is coming soon, as well as the video for “Body On Me” with Ashanti & Akon. Which one will the fans see first?

Nelly: Well, we just shot the video for “Stepped On My J’z” a couple weeks ago and it’s not like I expect it to be a #1 or anything like that, but I think it’s good summer jam and something for the people to enjoy and I think the fans are gonna enjoy it. We had a lot of fun shooting it. I’ll be shooting the “Body On Me” video next, we haven’t shot that one just yet.

Terrell: Ok, that’s what’s up. Now did you have any last words the fans and the readers?

Nelly: Definitely. The new album is coming soon, and I appreciate all the support that my fans have been showing me from the beginning and throughout my career. So, as long as ya’ll hanging with me, then I’m good. I’ll see you real soon on tour. My new album “Brass Knuckles” is in stores August 19th. So I’m ready, let’s do it!

Terrell: Alright, sounds good. Well, I definitely can’t wait to hear the album.

Nelly: Thanks man, I appreciate it, I think you‘ll enjoy it.

Terrell: No doubt. Thanks a lot for your time today Nelly, it’s much appreciated.

Nelly, Akon, & Pharrell To Form Supergroup?

This past weekend, Nelly entertained a select few at the Red Rock Hotel’s suites in Las Vegas for his listening party for the long overdue album titled “Brass Knuckles”. When discussing the songs featured on the album, Akon made a special appearance along with Jermaine Dupri. As Akon was discussing his relationship with Nelly and the song he produced titled “Body On Me,” a small tidbit of information leaked out.
“Me and Nelly used to bump into each other off and on and it had nothing to do with music. We were always looking for the opportunity to work together,” Akon said. “There was a thing that Nelly was coming up with that had me, him and Pharrell possibly doing an album together. We just wanted to find something we could do together.”
The room lit up as this was the first time a collaboration of this magnitude had ever been discussed. But just how realistic is the collaboration?
“Right now it’s just a concept,” Nelly responded when questioned about the trio working together. “I just got the idea because I love groups like Bell Biv Devoe. When they got a chance to come together. When LSG (Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill) did it. Nobody has really done it on the Hip Hop level. Nobody has put egos aside and said ‘You know what? Let’s do something that would be crazy! We don’t have that (moment in time) and I feel like we’re missing that something special.”

Talks of multiple supergroups have always been swimming in the gossip pool. However, aside from The Firm or some of the R&B/Hip Hop collabs with R Kelly and Jay-Z or Bow Wow and Omarion, there hasn’t been a collaborative effort that could impact the charts like this.
“It’s just (several) different concepts that he’s throwing out and I’m entertaining,” Akon continued. “That’s how it is. You never really know when and how that magic is going to happen. I just love collaborating because it brings out the best in whoever we are collaborating with.”

Nelly held a press conference last weekend in Las Vegas to announce the new album “Brass Knuckles.” JD, Akon and Sylvia Rhone (who happens to be both the President of Motown and Exec. VP of Universal Records) all made appearances at the event. “Brass Knuckles” will be Nelly”s first full-length studio album consisting of new material in almost four years and is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2008.

Posted May 26, 2008 -- St.Louis respresentative Nelly blazed his own trail without blinking twice. 8 years ago, he released his freshmen debut,Country Grammar, and he was that self defiant individual that did not follow. And 'til this very day, Nelly lays his own blueprint. With his fifth solo set Brass Knuckles just one month away from release, Nelly has a lot to get off his chest. BET.com caught up with the St. Louis poster child to find out where's been hiding for the past 4 years, his sister's death, what's really going on with him and Ashanti, and why hip hop beef is just not on his menu.

BET.com: You’re last CD was released back in 2004. Why did you decide to wait almost four years to release another one.

Nelly: I usually take two years. I mean, I ain’t one of those people, but I applaud those who can, do an album every year becausel, for me, it's kind of, like, you may work on an album for about four months, you may promote the album for the next four months, then you go on tour for another four months, and before you know it, it’s time to do an album again. It’s like how do you do that? What’s on your mind? Promotions? What’s about to go into the music? So I usually give it like 2 years or something to that nature but, with this one, it took a little longer. And then just trying to get things situated with this label, you know, I was going through so much with them back in the past, I felt like I should have been paid for albums a long time ago. I’m steady giving you my money but I’m not receiving your money, you know, so that scenario had to be worked out a little bit.

BET.com: Did the passing of your sister play a role in your hiatus?

Nelly: You know that was one of the most tragic things ever in my life, if not the, yeah, it was the most tragic that ever had happened to me in my life. You know, 6 months later after that my grandfather passed, it wasn’t good. It just wasn’t good. [Editor’s note, Nelly’s sister passed away in 2005 due to Leukemia.]

BET.com: Throughout your whole career, you’ve stayed in your respective lane in regards to your music. Has that benefitted your progression as an artist?

Nelly: I think people listen to my singles, and people who criticize my music the way they do don’t listen to my albums, they just listen to my single. ‘Cause if you listen to my albums, I’ve always done songs like, “And They Say," and you know different joints like “Lovin Me," “Greed, Hate, and Envy," [songs] that may have a different perspective on some of the [stuff] I went through. But they don’t want to hear that, you know? Some people make music for the different situations, but, when was it said that your music had to be what you went through? Because if that’s the case, you wouldn’t have half the pop artists or R&B that’s out today because they’re singing songs that’s been written by other people.... If you want to know about my life, ask me. I talk to you, I could tell you. I didn’t know I had to put it in my music, but I get it though that sometimes people want to grow with you and feel a part of your life. And I do do that, don’t get it twisted. But it’s just, maybe I don’t do it as much as people would like during an album, which is my choice, this is what I choose to do.

BET.com: Hip hop thrives off of competition, and sometimes that competition leads to conflict and confrontation. How do you manage to keep yourself removed from that type of environment?

Nelly: I just don’t f**k with nobody. You don’t f**k with me, I don’t f**k with you. I ain't got no problems with you, as long as you not coming at me. It’s just one of those instincts like, I aint got nothing against that brother over there. I ain’t even coming at him like that. But if he said something to me, then it’s whatever. But I think people get that. I think perception is one thing, but when you get to meet people, I think that’s another as well. When people meet me they’re, like, ‘oh Nelly’s a cool dude, he ain’t even about that’... You eating, I’m eating. As hard as it is for brothers out here now, why would I want to disturb what the hell you got going on? I wouldn’t want you to disturb mine.

BET.com: But there have been instances where things have become very personal between rappers…..

Nelly: I got a daughter and a son I’m trying to look after. You f**k with them, I got to do ya. That’s it basically. I don’t f**k with nobody, so therefore hopefully don’t anybody f**k with me.

BET.com: You’ve maintained your relevance for 8 years straight. Is your secret adapting to the trends that come and go or staying true to yourself?

Nelly: I think that comes from creating my own lane, you feel what I’m saying? Some people are walking in other people’s realm. I came and solidified my own s**t. So no matter what I do, this is my own shit. You can’t say Nelly tried to be like nobody else. It’s just like, and that’s the beautiful thing about when Country Grammar and all that s**t came out.... I had the Teamsters, which was two young brothers that were in Harlem. And I also had Lil’ Wayne. That’s all I had on Country Grammar. And that’s why I love Lil’ Wayne to this day. That’s my little brother; anything he needs he gets from Nelly. It’s not like we didn’t ask people. Nobody wanted to f**k with me. Lil’ Wayne was the only one that heard my music and was like ‘I like him, he’s tight.'

BET.com: Any grudges towards the ones that declined working with you?

Nelly: Nah, I can’t grudge people. That’s their choice. Just don’t get mad when you come and ask me, and that’s my choice. That’s all. I’m not mad at you for making a choice, never. I'm never mad at people for making a legitimate choice.

BET.com: I’m sure they’ve requested your services since then haven’t they?

Nelly: Yeah, everybody done asked in the past 8 years. I'm not saying I’ll never do music with them again. But then again, I'm not mad because it helped me achieve what I wanted to achieve and that solidified me as an artist. Some people need somebody on the hook; some people need somebody to come up with the concept; some people need somebody to put them in a direction or put them in a place for them to go write. I solidified myself a long time ago, so now when I do albums, yeah, I work with people now because I’ve already proved if I need to do it on my own I can.

BET.com: Let’s talk about Brass Knuckles. Where are you taking this project? Describe the feeling of it.

Nelly: I named it Brass Knuckles. It’s just how hard I thought it would hit you, like pow! It’s real energetic, it’s real aggressive, and it's uptempo.

BET.com: Are you concerned with the backlash about featuring Fergie on the record being that she’s more of a pop artist?

Nelly: That’s the thing; it’s got a screw feel to it. Polow Da Don wasn’t playing with that beat man. It's hard, and some people who hear it think ‘Nelly and Fergie, oh it’s a pop song,' which is cool. To each his own. But I think now it's starting to break through. The record is turning around in a way, when it first came out, pop radio and everybody jumped on it. Urban radio was a little skeptical ‘because of the name, but now it's starting to turn around.

BET.Com: Who did you recruit for production and features?

Nelly: I got these cats called Free Agents, out of the So So Def camp and they produced a track with me, T.I. and L.L. Cool J. LL, which is crazy. It’s called “Hold Up." Usher is on a joint called “Long Night” produced by J. Lac, his little brother, which is [also] crazy. “Stepped On My J’s," produced by Jermaine Dupri also featuring Jermaine and Ciara. It was cool to just get that female perspective, and you know I come from that Jordan era. I got my man Pharrell on there, Nate Dogg, Chuck D and a couple of others, you won’t be disappointed.

BET.com: Jumping into your personal business for a second, has the overwhelming presence from the media affected your relationship with Ashanti or has it made it stronger?

Nelly: You know what, we always know it's there but we just cool. We friends we like to have fun. It’s not a thing where we about to run off in the sunset and get married or no s**t like that. She’s smart, beautiful, talented and has a lot going for herself. She taking on this new challenge now with her basically being out on her own and not being with The Inc.(laughs) so to speak, and it’s a new thing for her. It’s been a challenge, but she’s handled it well.

BET.com: What do you want your fans to take from Brass Knuckles?

Nelly: I want them to take the energy of it. I want them to take it as a banging ass album. I’m not even going to lie. I’m not going to be like, ‘yo this is my best album ever.' That’s not up to me to decide. Your fans are going to decide which album they love from you.

05/17/08 - Nelly Talks Barack Obama/Curious George Controversy

This week, Sen. Barack Obama supporters gathered to protest the sale of a t-shirt which depicts the presidential hopeful as Curious George, the monkey from the popular children's book series. In this exclusive interview, SOHH caught up with St. Louis rapper, Nelly to weigh in on the t-shirt controversy.

The owner of Mulligan's Bar and Grill in Georgia is selling t-shirts which draw comparisons between presidential candidate Obama and the cartoon monkey Curious Grorge. The shirt features the inquisitive monkey peeling a banana and the words, "Obama in 08."

Though the bar owner claims the t-shirt was not intended to be racist, many Barack supporters are calling foul.

St Louis rapper Nelly brushed off the racially inspired t-shirt as political business as usual.

"It's politics," he said. "Politics are dirty. It's the dirtiest form of anything and everything. You gotta understand, these people are fighting for the right to be the President of the United States. This is the lowest of the low." [Watch Below]

The rapper was quick to offer Obama some advice for how to deal with the situation though.

"I think what he has to do is show thick skin on this one," he said. "I think we have to show our thick skin, for everybody that's supporting Barack and just say, 'You know what we ain't gon' sweat it.'"

Nelly sees the dirty politics as a desperate, last ditch effort to take Obama out of the Presidential race.

"We know y'all getting desperate," he says to those who oppose the candidate. "Where else do you have to go? You're not challenging his mind. You're not challenging what he is standing for. You're going into something now that's almost childish."

"[Barack Obama] has to be prepared for that," he continued. "This country is not going to let him off the hook. We know he's going to win this [Democratic] race. If he wins the overall race, he really has to prepare himself for some of the things. This is America, freedom of speech is used. So he has to get ready."

I was looking around recently, and I discovered this is just about the only Nelly fansite/media blog available. NellyWeb never updates anymore, and I am glad that I am a good source out there. I really love Nelly's music and have always looked forward to any project he takes on, no matter what. I obviously love "Tip Drill", (it's such a hot video), and I love his flow. I feel he's unique in his delivery, even the voice he has. It's different. He doesn't rap about guns/gang life as a theme in his music, he keeps it real, talking about the whole street life he has/had. "Country Grammar" is and will always be my favorite Nelly LP. I saw so much into his world of money, hoes, and the whole lifestyle of being a young African-American man trying to make a living with music, hoes, and the like involved. I want to be a recording artist like Nelly, and I look up to him.

So keep visiting for Nelly media that is quickly becoming a rarity on the Internet!
